Mothersbaugh combined synthesizer keyboards he used from his days with the band Devo with a 100 piece orchestra. The synthesized score is influenced by the work of Jean-Michel Jarre. The score was recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Mothersbaugh was influenced by a video essay from the YouTube channel Every Frame a Painting, which criticized the scores from previous Marvel Cinematic Universe films for their lack of memorability, to make the score for Thor: Ragnarok as distinctive as possible. © 2022 Film Score Monthly. All Rights Reserved.By August 2016, Mark Mothersbaugh was hired to score the film. Can't wait to hear what he does with this! His scores to the Jump St films are a blast. This is for an animated movie, but it sounds pretty heroic to me. Note what he does at the 2.00 mark and then fully extends at about 3:30. He may surprise us with a really heroic score for a Marvel hero. I liked the first two scores from Doyle and Tyler, but I've always wanted to see Mothersbaugh do a dramatic film. Looks like he is still scoring Thor: Ragnarok. but at least the score might be interesting for a change. I wouldn't watch it even if I was paid to.

(I wonder if he'll dare, as Brian Tyler did, to reference the motifs of other composers? Musical continuity is quite lacking in the Marvel films!)įingers crossed he will actually stay attached to the movie until it is released. I hope he can produce distinctive yet appropriate music for the film. Very unusual choice! His score for The Lego Movie was very moving at times his score for Pee-Wee's Big Holiday less so (though I haven't listened to the latter in a while). There's RUSHMORE, of course, but that sound probably wouldn't pass muster in a Marvel movie. His score for ROCKY & BULLWINKLE was pretty good, too. In fact, it played very much like a "Best of John Debney" scoreĭefinitely SAFE. I wouldn't say that Debney's IRON MAN 2 sounded anything like Zimmer. Can anybody recommend anything else?Ĭloudy With Chance of Meatballs and Pee Wee's Big Holiday are excellent! Speaking of Mark Mothersbaugh, I think I only have his music for the Lego movie. I hope they finally got their guts in order to make inspired choices for composers as well. Marvel's choice for directors has been interesting and surprising as well. So I wouldn't be surprised when in a few weeks or so Giacchino is announched as the replacement Remember when Carter Burwell was supposed to score Thor 2. Nice to have a surprising choice of composer! And it's working for them, so I guess they'll stick with it. There have been rare occasions, but in general, there's a sound they like.

I don't know that it's exactly a Zimmer approach, but I do agree, there's very little wiggle room for a composer's personality to shine through. all of whom have been forced to ape the "Wall Of Sound" Zimmer approach. One thing I will say about the Marvel films is they've certainly brought in a broad range of composers (Doyle, Craig Armstrong, Beck, Tyler, Debney) I hope MM survives the studio review process, unlike Burwell. One thing I will say about the Marvel films is they've certainly brought in a broad range of composers (Doyle, Craig Armstrong, Beck, Tyler, Debney), unlike their competitors who persist with one or two as permanent fixtures (apart from Suicide Squad). I was interested only because I like the director, I wasn't a real fan if the first 2 Thor films, but this is pretty cool news.

Seems a good fit for Taika Waititi's sensibilities.
